200 Women is a book and exhibition inspired by a belief that you can’t empower women without listening to their stories. Our subsequent idea was to persuade two hundred women in different parts of the world - whether they be rich or poor, black or white, educated or uneducated, famous or unknown - to sit or stand in front of a plain sheet of fabric and to be photographed and filmed while answering five fundamental questions.
Our goal was not to make a book about just successful and powerful women; those stories are important, but we wanted diversity, and above all, authenticity. Two hundred 'real women', with 'real stories'.
Hodan Isse was born in Hargeisa, Somalia. She holds a PhD in economics from George Mason University in Virginia and two master's degrees – in economics and international development – from Ohio University. She is a clinical assistant professor emeritus at the University at Buffalo School of Management. Isse is a cofounder and board member of the United States–based Somali Mental Health Foundation, a member of the board of directors for the Central Bank of Somalia and a founder of H.E.A.L., a not-for-profit based in Buffalo, New York, that helps refugees settle into their new lives. She is the first lady of the Puntland State of Somalia.
