200 Women is a book and exhibition inspired by a belief that you can’t empower women without listening to their stories. Our subsequent idea was to persuade two hundred women in different parts of the world - whether they be rich or poor, black or white, educated or uneducated, famous or unknown - to sit or stand in front of a plain sheet of fabric and to be photographed and filmed while answering five fundamental questions.
Our goal was not to make a book about just successful and powerful women; those stories are important, but we wanted diversity, and above all, authenticity. Two hundred 'real women', with 'real stories'.
Maria Shriver was born in Chicago in Illinois, USA. She is a mother, producer, a Peabody and Emmy Award–winning journalist and a New York Times bestselling author. She is the founder of Shriver Media. As California's first lady from 2003 to 2010, Shriver advocated for women, the working poor, military families and the disabled. In 2009, Shriver launched The Shriver Report, a non-partisan initiative that raises awareness around the issues women and their families face. Shriver is also a leading Alzheimer's advocate, and the founder of the Women's Alzheimer's Movement; in 2017, Shriver was awarded the Alzheimer's Association's lifetime achievement award.
