200 Women is a book and exhibition inspired by a belief that you can’t empower women without listening to their stories. Our subsequent idea was to persuade two hundred women in different parts of the world - whether they be rich or poor, black or white, educated or uneducated, famous or unknown - to sit or stand in front of a plain sheet of fabric and to be photographed and filmed while answering five fundamental questions.
Our goal was not to make a book about just successful and powerful women; those stories are important, but we wanted diversity, and above all, authenticity. Two hundred 'real women', with 'real stories'.
Sara Khan was born in Bradford, England. She holds a master's degree in understanding and securing human rights from the University of London's School of Advanced Study. In 2008, she co-founded Inspire, a counter-extremism and women's-rights organisation. Khan is one of the United Kingdom's leading female Muslim voices on countering Islamist extremism and promoting human rights. She is also the author of the book The Battle for British Islam: Reclaiming Muslim Identity from Extremism. Khan's work has earned her numerous accolades, including a position among 2015's top-ten influencers on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour Power List.
